A smartphone is a mobile device that offers far more than just making phone calls and sending text messages. Unlike feature phones, smartphones are equipped with powerful hardware and advanced mobile operating systems, enabling a wide range of software applications, internet access (including web browsing over mobile broadband), and multimedia capabilities such as music, video, photography, and gaming. In addition to core functions like voice calls and messaging, smartphones can browse the internet and run various software programs, much like a computer. Most smartphones feature a touchscreen interface for easy interaction. There are thousands of available apps, including games, personal tools, and business applications, all designed to run directly on the device. The image shows examples of popular models like the Samsung Galaxy and Apple iPhone. The first smartphone, the Simon Personal Communicator, was developed by IBM in 1992 and became available to consumers in 1994.
